With a History dating back to 1810, Westlake City has grown to become one of the best in Ohio. The City started when two families arrived, and set up homesteads in Township 7, Range 15. This part of the township is known as Bay Village. In 1811, Leverett Johnson started to clear land that is now known as Westlake- he is considered as the first Pioneer of the city. These families and other first settlers thrived on agriculture, which involved raising small fruits and grapes as well as grains.
By then it was known as Dover Village, but in 1940, the name changed to Village of Westlake. The change was necessary in order to avoid confusion with another Ohio community known as Dover. With the change of the name, there was a major change in population. The population of the city doubled by 1950 and in 1960, it jumped to almost 13,000, marking a 162% increase. The rise in population paved way for changes and planning to shape the City’s future. In 1957, the village became a city and in the 1960’s the city officials implemented the first guide plan and municipal zoning ordinances.
An introduction of contemporary winding subdivisions took place in 1960’s and 70’s. It was also during this time that the City got its first office park- King James. Other constructions that took place include the completion of Interstate 90 in 1976, extension of Crocker Road to Center Ridge Road and the development of Ranney Parkway as an industrial and office park area. St. John Medical center, then known as St. John West Shore Hospital, was opened in 1981, after 5 years of planning and 2 yeas of construction.
Other major changes were carried out in the 21st century, and included the construction and improvement of different facilities like business telephone systems. As the city is celebrating the bicentennial, it continues to grow to become a destination for companies and individuals.
